Why couldn’t Google have bought Skype? The big eBay mistake

When Google buys a company, everyone scratches their head and asks, why?

Bloggers immediately go into overdrive as they post speculations about what Google is up to, or they rant about the stupid decision on Google’s part in buying a company that has nothing to do with their services.

Everyone eventually forgets about the whole matter until months or years go by and Google surprises the world with a new service either changes the Internet forever, or nearly ruins a service that is offered by a competitor.

And then there are the Google wannabes. eBay leads the pack. When eBay bought Skype in 2005 everyone wanted them to be “pulling a Google,” everyone refused to believe that eBay would buy Skype without a plan for somehow finding an innovative way to combine the two company’s services.

Since that time, eBay has become a dumpy flea market of the same daily vendors and Skype has become the podcaster’s power tool.

Skype is the core of free verbal communication all over the world.

eBay has lost its way.

Skype founders and eBay are now facing a litigation problem that may mean the end of Skype as we know it. eBay intends to change the core of Skype.

sounds like a lot of chest thumping going on… I’m not sure that Skype will go away, but it does sound like something fishy is going on.

With more users of Skype than of FaceBook, something good will have to come out of this… won’t it?

A good business plan could put Skype deep in the black, but Ebay has been sitting idle on it for years… I hope the original founders can get Skype back and really make good use of it.
